Your key won’t turn in the ignition?
If your key won’t turn in the ignition and you are stuck in a random parking lot thinking all hope is lost, don’t worry, YET. The most common cause is that the steering wheel is in a bind. The steering wheel lock is designed to make your car harder to steal and easier to tow. Ensure your vehicle is in park then follow the steps below.
STEP ONE
AVOID using brute force. First, try inserting the key into the ignition and turn the steering wheel left and right while attempting to turn the key forward to the “ON” position. This should unlock the steering wheel and allow the ignition to turn.
STEP TWO
Sometimes there are other factors involved like dirt and debris in the lock cylinder. DO NOT put anything other than the key into the ignition. Insert the key into the ignition and remove it several times. Then repeat step one. If it still isn’t free, try spraying a small amount of WD-40 into the ignition, then insert and remove the key several times.
STEP THREE
If you have access to a second set of keys to your vehicle try using them. Sometimes the keys become worn from repeated use over time. Using a different set of keys may allow the pins to line up properly.
If the steps above did not work, it could be a sign of other mechanical issues.
Remember, if you don’t feel comfortable with any of these steps, to contact a highly trained locksmith. Irmo Lock Company has technicians available 24hrs a day to help!
